Cancun and the Riviera Maya in the Yucatán Peninsula are among Mexico’s most sought-after regions for extraordinary getaways. With year-round sunshine, powdery white sand beaches, and crystal-clear turquoise Caribbean waters, this tropical paradise is perfect for relaxation and adventure alike. Known for its friendly locals and warm Mexican hospitality, a vacation here is sure to be unforgettable. If you're planning one of the ultimate family beach vacations, this region offers everything you need for a memorable escape. Read on to discover more about this amazing destination, including a recent Cancun safety update.

Is Cancun Safe to Visit in 2026?

As of 2026, Cancun continues to be one of the most visited destinations in the Caribbean, welcoming millions of international travelers each year. The U.S. Department of State maintains Quintana Roo, the state where Cancun is located, at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. This is the same advisory level assigned to many popular destinations around the world and recommends taking normal travel precautions while remaining aware of your surroundings, particularly in unfamiliar areas.¹

Authorities continue to prioritize security in Cancun's main tourist zones through coordinated efforts between local, state, and federal agencies. Visitors can help ensure a smooth vacation by using authorized transportation services, following local guidance, and staying informed through official travel advisories. For most travelers, these simple precautions are enough to enjoy everything Cancun has to offer with confidence.²

Current Security Landscape in Cancun (2025)

As of 2025, Cancun remains a popular tourist destination with a generally favorable safety profile. The U.S. Department of State continues to classify Quintana Roo, the state encompassing Cancun, at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. This advisory indicates that while the region is largely safe for travelers, there are areas where caution is advised, particularly after dark in certain parts of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

Local authorities have maintained a visible security presence, especially in the Hotel Zone and other tourist-heavy areas, to ensure the safety of visitors. However, travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant, avoid displaying valuables, and stay informed about their surroundings. It's also advisable to use reputable transportation services and limit travel to well-populated areas, particularly after nightfall.

While Cancun's tourism infrastructure remains robust, visitors should exercise standard precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Cancun May 2023 Update

The Yucatan state has zero travel warnings for the year 2023. The government is saying to “Use Normal Precautions When Traveling.” The neighboring state, Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, is listed as “Exercise Increased Caution When Traveling To.” This is a precautionary measure due to several incidents linked to illegal activities. They are not widespread. It is common to see the government military roaming the streets for your protection, as Mexico takes the safety of its foreign visitors very seriously.

Cancun’s vast white sand beaches, the broad selection of gourmet restaurants, and the vibrant culture continue to draw tourists in by droves. Hotel vacancies in Cancun are at an all-time low as resorts scramble to meet tourist demand! It is advised to book 2-3 months in advance if possible.

Is Cancun Safe to Visit in 2023?

Short answer: Yes! Cancun is a safe place for tourists to visit. We know the media has showcased recent events happening at this Mexican beach destination, however, as long as you know which places to avoid and the safest spots in the city, you will be just fine! A clear example of a safe spot will always be your resort. All-inclusive resorts in Cancun have security measures to maintain their guests safe and sound throughout their stay so, if you are not leaving your hotel, you have nothing to worry about!

On the other hand, if you want to explore the city and its surroundings, just pay attention the places where you are booking your tour and the places you are visiting; it is always best to ask at your hotel for help with these types of inquiries; in case you want to do it yourself, you can always check out websites like Cancun Adventures, Xcaret.com, and TripAdvisor among others.

To enhance security, Cancun’s government has displayed navy and army personnel along the city and beaches, so tourists and locals know they are being taken care of 24/7.

Cancun January 2022 Update

Cancun is no stranger to sensational headlines that paint this beautiful and mystical destination in a negative light. The latest headlines were about two Canadians shot dead at a hotel near Cancun. Headlines like this leave many people wondering, is it safe to visit Cancun? Our January Cancun safety update would like to reassure travelers that no matter what may have appeared in the news as of late, the Mexican state of Quintana Roo continues to qualify as a safe and reputable international travel destination. As you start to plan vacations for the holidays or in the coming year, keep in mind that both the Mexican government and our Villa del Palmar Luxury Resort & Spa Cancun, have and will continue to take precautions to keep visitors and guests safe at all costs. It is our top priority that you experience the deep serenity and local hospitality that the region is known for.

From an array of outdoor activities to a bustling culinary and nightlife scene, the region has a long history of both domestic and international tourism. It’s here that you’ll experience once-in-a-lifetime adventures such as exploring the cenotes or ancient Mayan ruins.

In an effort to keep the destination safe for tourists to enjoy all Quintana Roo’s treasures, the Mexican Federal Government has set up a new Tourist Protection Army, which was deployed on December 1st, 2021 with the intention to reinforce security in the state and protect tourists, businesses, and residents. Our safety update confirms that several Mexican soldiers have taken posts along popular beaches throughout the area in the tourist destinations of Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Tulum, permanently. While this may indeed be an unusual sight compared to your hometown, their presence guarantees the safety of travelers and guests, leaving you free of stress as you continue your vacation.

Travel State Government

“There are no restrictions on U.S. government employees for travel in Quintana Roo state, which includes tourist areas such as: Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya.”

Mexico Travel Advisory – Travel.State.Gov

Cancun, along with the Riviera Maya, has grown to become one of the top destinations for tourism in Mexico, and because of this, local officials take the safety of their region very seriously. In order to keep the tourists who visit from around the world safe while visiting Cancun, the city is carefully patrolled by federal, state, and local police forces. Seeing such an abundance of police officers constantly present might take some getting used to, but it is actually a terrific thing to have them visible around the clock. They are dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of their city so that everyone, both locals and tourists, can enjoy the alluring seaside environment in total relaxation.

Safety Tips for Traveling

As you get ready to travel somewhere, it is a good idea to recall some basic travel safety tips, regardless of your destination. These tips are useful when traveling to Mexico, of course, but are practical anywhere in the world (even in your home country!). Obviously, your first line of defense when staying safe while traveling is to use common sense and remain alert in all situations. When you visit an ATM (we strongly recommend using only ATMs that are found at reputable local banks or those at your resort), be vigilant in shielding the screen and keypad.

Do not wear expensive jewelry or watches that might attract unwanted attention, and avoid taking excessive amounts of cash out and about with you. If you will be going to any local casinos, bars or nightclubs, stay cautious and designate at least one person in your travel group to remain sober and keep an eye on everyone else. Stick together with your travel companions rather than splitting up, especially when out at late at night. If you plan to drive, make it a point to travel during daylight hours. Choosing to take a taxi at night is always a great idea, just to be on the safe side.

Where am I Safest?

The safest place is always your resort because we have security measures and safety plans. At Garza Blanca, we offer a long list of on-site activities for adventure and entertainment. You can fill your day with a Yoga class, Spa treatment, or an Aqua Zumba class. In the evenings, unwind in our heated rooftop pool or dine at any of our signature gourmet restaurants. With multiple heated pools, a state-of-the-art Gym, a Kids Club, Aqua Park, a full-service Spa, and endless on-land and water activities, you never have to leave your resort!

Off-Site Adventures

Though you can fill your entire schedule at Garza Blanca on-site, this shouldn’t deter you from venturing outside the resort grounds if you and your party want to explore. You may want to try many outdoor adventures, beaches, and restaurants while in Cancun. Talk to your resort about the best options for taking your vacation off the beaten path. We recommend using the buddy system when you are in an unfamiliar place. Keeping track of your party when you’re in new surroundings will ensure you stay together and leave on time.
